Inductors are electronics components that stores energy in its magnetic field . Since inductors are only useful in AC current source so it acts as a piece of wire if the source is DC . Inductors are in various form , any piece of wire wrapped around the piece of metal or just circular or spiral bond of wire acts as a inductor . So in many application you do not need to buy an inductor , you can make it yourself .
Since inductor is a passive element emf is induced across it terminal due to changing current to time according to faradays law .As capacitor is used to store energy in its electric field , it is used to store energy in its magnetic field , charged capacitor, inductor combination together produce an oscillatory circuit that can be useful in various application like to generate clock , pulse etc , but dont worry about its application now , we will discuss role of inductor somewhere in the project area of this website with step by step solution . I do not want to present here a detail about working principle of inductor because it require a lots of knowledge about electric field , flux , laws of current and many electromagnetic equations but we do not need to know all these things in practical electronics , we just hit and trial the solution and make our own theory about the components , so lets discuss about inductior's type
Type-1 Ferromagnetic Core Inductor or Iron-core Inductors :
Any piece of wire wounded
around the iron rod is in this type of inductor can be seen in many electronics devices like old radios tvs , since they have ability to store high energy in its magnetic field due to its high magnetic permiability these types of inductor are useful in various applications
Type -2 Air core inductor : In this type of inductor there is no iron or any magnetic material used , only wire is
made spiral so that it just acts as inductor , The main advantage of this form of inductors is that, at high magnetic field strength, they have a minimal signal loss. On the other hand, they need a bigger number of turns to get the same inductance that the solid cored inductors would produce. They are free of core losses because they are not depending on a solid core.
Type -3 toroidal core inductor :
Toroidal Inductor constructs of a circular ring-formed magnetic core that characterized by it is magnetic with high permeability material like iron powder, for which the wire wounded to get inductor. It works pretty well in AC electronic circuits' application.
The advantage of this type is that, due to its symmetry, it has a minimum loss in magnetic flux; therefore it radiates less electromagnetic interference near circuits or devices. Electromagnetic interference is very important in electronics that require high frequency and low power.
Applications of Inductors
There are many application of inductor , common example of inductors are in transformer , in radio receiver antennas , they can be used as sensor if we properly configure them . Inductors cannot fabricate inside the integrated circuit so we need to place these inductors externally .
