Timekeeping on space and space craft plays a critical role to measure the exact time and location on deep space . NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have just developed atomic clock for deep space exploration . The recent developed clock is smaller, lighter and measure more precise magnitudes than any atomic clock before .
What is Atomic clock ?
Atomic clock are the most precise time keeping machines that operate on atomic level . Instead of using conventional pendulum or electromagnetic oscillation atomic clock uses vibration of molecule or atom to measure the exact time period . If the atom level particle do not oscillate accurately,then nothing is accurate in this universe , this clock is based on this hypothesis .
With the help of this machine The International System of Units (SI) defined one second as 9,192,631,770 Oscillations of caesium-133 atom . These types of clock are made using radio wave communicating between the particles
Most space craft are controlled using two way communication method which is pretty conventional . In this method scientists send signal from ground and wait for its returning and the distance is calculated by measuring the sent and received time . But this newly discovered clock do not need to send back the signal to earth every thing is measured and processed on space craft and necessary changes are adjusted .
